i've read (and listened to) quite a bit of Chomsky (and Zinn and Parenti for that matter). I think he is ridiculously overrated as far as political insight but certainly has solid merits in his linguistic scholarship (which has had a fair amount of use with the AI/Neural Network community).

I am more apt to take the critiisms of a Gore Vidal seriously (although even he gets a little too off kilter at times) than Chomsky, who seems to have turned into his own cult of personality with the basis being - as long as its critical of the US policies he dislikes, it must be ok. He can be just as selective with facts, and just as focused on the sensationalism of conspiracy and rhetoric - except because instead of being a simpleton blowhard like Limbaugh he opts to use the more academic and loquaicious form.
